Plant Structure

In this two-part lesson, students examine the close relationship between plant needs and the structures that help supply those needs.

Student Objectives

Part 1

  • Relate air, light, a growing medium and nutrients to the health and survival of a plant
  • Define a plant cell in terms of its structure and the functions of the organelles comprising it
  • Compare and contrast a plant and an animal cell

Part 2

  • Define a plant in terms of its structure (roots, root hairs, stem and leaves) and their functions
  • Compare and contrast phloem and xylem
  • Compare and contrast vascular tissue in the roots, stem and leaves
  • Define a leaf in terms of its internal structure
  • Compare and contrast palisade and spongy leaf cells
  • Explain how water and gases enter and exit a leaf
  • Give examples of plants with modified leaves
  • Explain why some tree leaves change color in autumn
