Plant Structure
In this two-part lesson, students examine the close relationship between plant needs and the structures that help supply those needs.
Student Objectives
Part 1
- Relate air, light, a growing medium and nutrients to the health and survival of a plant
- Define a plant cell in terms of its structure and the functions of the organelles comprising it
- Compare and contrast a plant and an animal cell
Part 2
- Define a plant in terms of its structure (roots, root hairs, stem and leaves) and their functions
- Compare and contrast phloem and xylem
- Compare and contrast vascular tissue in the roots, stem and leaves
- Define a leaf in terms of its internal structure
- Compare and contrast palisade and spongy leaf cells
- Explain how water and gases enter and exit a leaf
- Give examples of plants with modified leaves
- Explain why some tree leaves change color in autumn
